The "Yeoman" says: — "Our old friend, Dr Trood, has been passing through an exceedingly painful experience. He was conducting an operation some time ago, when he received a slight cut on the third finger of the left hand and blood poisoning set in. His condition became so serious that for a fortnight his life just hung in the balance. He is now steadily improving, but the severe struggle he had for life has made a great difference in him and it will be a long time before he is restored to his old self.

The story of the doctor who almost died from a small cut to his finger that resulted in blood poisoning, comes from the Numurka Leader Newspaper on Friday 13th June 1902 Edition. It appeared on page seven.
It makes one realise how fragile life was before antibiotics and how risky the current situation of antibiotic overuse, resulting in antibiotic resistance, really is.
Still, some remedies, used at that time, are still just as effective. When the doctor’s medications had failed and a priest had given the last rights to my cousin who struggled to breathe, through lung congestion, my father chopped up some onions and made the supposed dying boy breathe the fumes from them. He cried, and he brought up the airway blocking phlegm and recovered. The human race survived before antibiotics and it will survive after them. We might even learn to use more of nature's remedies and depend a lot less on whatever new varieties of antibiotics the scientists develop, so that they remain effective for longer.
Will we learn from history?
