Southern Waterfalls Self-Drive Tour
The 17km waterfall circuit begins near Millaa Millaa. Follow the Theresa Creek Road, through scenic countryside, to the Millaa Millaa Falls, which cascade into a pristine waterhole ideal for swimming. Drive on to Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls.
All of these waterfalls are unique, and most are surrounded by rainforest. There is a viewing platform at the base of Zillie Falls falls where you can view of the rapids. Ellinjaa Falls cascades over many lava columns. The next waterfall on the circuit is Mungalli Falls.
Souita and Pepina Falls are accessed from the road leading to Ravenshoe. You can visit Australia’s widest waterfall, the Millstream Falls, which is 5 kilometres beyond the township.
Little Millstream Falls and the Koombooloomba Dam are great spots to fish and camp. This region has a wealth of wildlife, flowering trees, bushes and birds. The rainforests adjacent to the waterfalls are a great place to spot water dragons and frogs.
There are five main roads leading into the Atherton Tablelands.
From the south, you can choose from two main routes to the plateau: There is the Gillies Highway, which winds its way up from Gordonvale. The Palmerston Highway links the Atherton Tablelands to the Great Green Way, coastal road. Reg and I chose the Palmerson Highway for most of our trips into the Atherton Tablelands.
We covered the northern section of the Atherton Tablelands and the routes travelling from the north via the Rex Range Road. We included a visit to the resort town, Port Douglas, into that tour.
We accessed the eastern coastal area via the Kuranda Range Road from Smithfield in Atherton Tablelands Northern Section.
There is also a western road link into the tablelands via Mt Garnet and Ravenshoe.
