I communicate with many gray nomads as they travel around the country and right now one of the most popular places to visit at this time of year, is the beautiful Flinders Ranges in South Australia. I have always loved the Flinders Ranges.
Travelling north Port Augusta, you can stay at the Flinders Ranges National Park camping area $19.50 for an overnight stay in a dusty roadside stop in the National Park (Dingley Dell).
I would suggest having a free roadsides camp book with you and stay at free 24 hour overnight stops and take solar panels to power your evening lights, with you. Forget the noisy generators and be respectful of your neighbors.
The main National Park camping area for caravans is Dingley Dell, which is a roadside stop with one unisex drop toilet and 30kms from all the walks at the pound. $19.50 for a roadside stop is a lot of money. I would not be impressed.
$29.50 for an unpowered site - in another area of the National Park, no power sites available), there are free camp sites outside of the park and with a great view of the mountains. Get that free camps book before you travel.
Leaving the Flinders, at Murray Town you pay $5 for toilets and water and grass. (2011 price - check locally or with the tourist information people for the current price.)
Meandered further south to Port Germein, Port Perie, Crystal Brook spend some time here, lovely places, includ some historic walks.
Make your way over to Port Broughton for the night amongst the trees on a country road free camp site.
Visit Wallaroo, Moonta, Snowtown, Port Wakefield and Auburn and then into the pretty Clare valley. A lovely spot and lots to see and visit. Visit the Clare wineries including the famous Seven Hill - makers of the Sacramental wine. Ride bikes from Clare to Auburn and return. The bike track is on the old rail line - 48km round trip.
Leave Clare for a journey through Broken Hill and SW Qld.
