Introduction, a family insight.
Seniors may remember a few of the volcanic eruptions in their time, around Rabaul, New guinea, prior to its destruction in more recent history. One of my uncles was a seismologist, who was killed on duty at the crater’s rim, at the time of the 1937 eruption of two volcanoes, Tavurvur and Vulcan, which killed 507 people.
His wife and family were promptly told they were to immediately leave their home and return to Australia where she would qualify for a widow’s pension. Our gray nomad population may remember how tough times were in Australia for women with children and no male supporter in the paternalistic society of our past.
Myer Melbourne got news of how poorly my Aunt and her children had been treated when she applied for work as a sales assistant. They questioned her and discovered she had three children and had been granted no compensation payment or home, just what luggage they could take on the plane trip they were given to Australia and the executives at Myer, decided they wanted to give this woman a chance to provide well for her family.
After calling her in for an interview and then holding discussions they approached my aunt with a proposal that they would place her on a senior manager's wage and send her to train as a chiropodist and while she trained they would build within their Melbourne store a Foot clinic and once trained she would become the manager and senior podiatrist in the salon and her would be on a senior manager's wage.
At the time, Sir Sydney Myer and a Sensational Senior of his day, was well known for some of his grand philanthropic gestures. Less known were these individual personal helping hands to worthy Australians who simply needed a stepping stone, like the one given to my hard working Aunt, which enabled her to continue to raise and educate her children to the standard they had while her husband had been alive.
So that is my introduction to this article on foot care.
It’s wise to have your feet tended to by a podiatrist, rather than trying to do anything involving cutting or scraping, yourself, but for us, nomads can indeed become involved in general foot hygiene and care while traveling. Preventative care is essential when a long way from home and your enjoyment of a trip is affected by the health of your feet.
