Our drinking water comes from the Goulburn River and I filter it before I drink it.
Today I found out it is unfit to drink even when boiled and filtered.
My neighbour brought out two glasses he had filled with drinking water and it contained thick blue green algae sludge in it. I will be buying water to drink and not using the water in the taps until further notice. This will certainly add to the cost of living for us.
I know if you have a hot tub you need to maintain the water at advised temperatures and use a hot tub cover as part of the healthy maintenance treatment to ensure the water stays clean and healthy, free of algae and bacteria.
Accommodation providers around Lake Eildon are reporting a small number of cancellations because of blue-green algae in the lake and Goulburn Murray Water, is warning people to stay out of the water because of the potentially toxic algae.
Don Hewitt from the Eildon Caravan Park says it is fully booked for the rest of the month and this summer has been its best in many years. He says he has had a few calls from people concerned about the algae and a handful of bookings have been cancelled.
"The people that come here have been coming here, a lot of them, for years," he said.
"A few people have rung up and said, 'what about the blue-green algae?' We've said well the warning is do not get into the water, do not waterski, do not eat the fish and people have chosen not to come, but the ones that are here don't seem to be worried about it."
